marc jacobsThis past weekend I found myself zoning out at the Denver airport while standing in the line for security. It was a pretty long line– maybe a 45 minute wait or so. I had a headache so I didn’t feel like passing the time by being on my phone. Instead I stood there and did some serious people watching. The airport is ideal for that sort of thing. I found myself playing a little guessing game– where could these people be from, based on what they were wearing?

Lean, fit dude with a man bun, v-neck tee and Sanuks: California. Group of females wearing adorable cowboy boots- one with a sweater dress and the other with jeans, a flannel and a baseball cap: Texas (the Texans hat and southern accents gave that one away). Gal with chacos, jeans and a patagonia coat: Good ol’ Moooontana. Couple in tank tops, a whole lot of bling, and some seriously bronzed skin: HAS to be Las Vegas. Then I looked down at myself- 6’1 chick with Lulu pants from head to toe and Nike Air Maxes: volleyball coach.

This got me thinking about style and individuality. What is it that makes people dress the way that they do? Sure, trends are a big part of it. You see something you like on someone else and you are more likely to purchase it yourself. That’s why you tend to see the same type of style in different parts of the country. But what else adds to your “style?” Do you have to look like you just walked out of the front cover of a magazine to have “style?” Not at all!

style3Style is about expressing who you are and making a statement without having to say a word. When I wake up in the morning, I always enjoy the act of picking out what I want to wear that day based on how I am feeling. I’m not afraid to admit that I have quite the loud and confident personality, and I take pride in the fact that my attire shows that off. Living in Missoula, MT (aka Hipster Nation), you won’t see me walking into a brewery with sweatpants and Birkenstocks on. No matter where I live, I will always enjoy dressing up and wearing the bold and vivacious clothes that I love.

When I walk into a store to shop, I am immediately drawn to the leopard print, the leather, the polka dots, and the loud floral pattern. It’s my nature. I love to stand out, and I love to feel unique. I hope that I can inspire all of my readers to do the same! I find so much joy in going shopping with my friends and finding them something that is a little out of their comfort zone. I swear I was a stylist in another life.

I haven’t talked much about me or “my people” since I started this blog. I thought today would be a good day to do so and to touch on the stylish expressions of just a few special people in my life, and how their style fits them. They did not give me permission to publish about them by the way, so SURPRISE and enjoy. 🙂

mom and dad1. Mom and Dad

I have got some seriously stylish parents. I blame them for my love of fashion. If you look back at baby pictures of me, I am always in matching outfits with hats and curly hair. Pretty sure they were shopping at Macy’s for me since day 1. Some of my favorite pieces in my closet to this day were picked out by them. I mean, look at this picture? Coordinating from head to toe, they sure look like they have it together… and they do. Best and most supportive parents in the world right there. They have given me nothing but confidence, independence, and the drive to go after my dreams. I love you, Mom and Dad!

rachel2. Rachel

The woman in this picture is one of the most giving and caring people I have ever met in my life. No idea why she chose me as one of her best friends! She had said that she always wanted to be an elementary school teacher since I can remember, and boy does she do it well. Chasing her own dream of mentoring one kiddo at a time, Rachel plays the teacher part perfectly: and she sure looks like one. You are adorable, bestie- and I am so proud of you!

bitty and carly3. Bitty and Carly

These two couldn’t be more different, and yet we are all so similar somehow! Our matching outfits in this photo are what brought us together (Relay For Life), and we have been buds ever since. These women are the ones that pushed me to start this blog in the first place, and it all started with them asking me for fashion advice in the office!

Bitty (the cute red head in the middle) has a loud and vibrant personality, and loves to show that through her clothes! I absolutely loved going shopping with her when she got a new job a few months back. She is not afraid to wear bright orange, or a crazy tribal pattern! When you look at Bitty when she walks into a room, and then you start talking to her, it ALL makes sense. Thank you Bitty for your constant buzz of energy and laughs that you have brought into my life.

Carly has a passion for mental wellness and positive energy. She is an extremely inspiring young woman and brings nothing but encouragement into my life. While Bitty and I love to tease her because she has such a love for CLOGS (yes, a fashion blogger just said clogs), she likes to keep her style sweet and simple, just like she is. Don’t worry, she now owns two pairs of boots that she can alternate with the clogs. 🙂 I adore you Carly and all that you bring to this world!

jessica4. Jessica

I am pretty sure this girl and I were twins separated at birth and taken to opposite sides of the country. Pretty funny that a gal from Montana could have so much in common with a beautiful woman from Georgia. We met during a Disney World internship in 2012.

jessica2Jessica’s southern charm comes out in her contemporary style. She likes to keep her outfits modest, but beautiful! A heart of gold and the cutest giggle you’ve ever heard, her charming and colorful wardrobe is right on point. We went wedding dress shopping in Atlanta this summer, and the dress she picked out could not be more fitting for her personality! I would show pictures, but she is not getting married until November. Future blog post for sure! I feel so blessed to have met you, Jessica! xoxo

mike25. Last but not least: My Partner in Crime

Michael Newman, or in other words the man that stole my heart, has a style that could not be more opposite than mine. I met this simple Montana boy on a blind date in a coffee shop, and I still remember the jeans and O’Neill hoodie that he was wearing that day. We all know he has NO CLUE what I was wearing. My first impression of Mike was that he was one of the sweetest most adorable guys I had ever met.

mikeI was drawn to him, not because of his clothes that he picked out in 2 seconds that day, but because of his carefree personality. Pretty crazy that a girl so obsessed with fashion would be drawn to a man that could care less about if the shirt he was wearing was on inside out. I love to tease him about his “wolf shirt” (see exhibit A above), and his American Flag sweater (I will save you all the pain of seeing that beauty), but in reality what he doesn’t know is that I am so proud of the person that he is and the aura of confidence surrounding him, and that I could really care less. Sure, I still like to pick out clothes for him and lay his outfits out when he has picture day at work. Not doing that would be like letting a beautiful model get dressed in the dark and then walk onto the runway! He’s too cute not to dress him up. While I know he prefers me in a plain white t shirt, jeans and very little make up, he loves me for me and my ridiculously large spare bedroom-turned walk-in closet. Not only that, but he helped me design this blog and continues to help with any technical issues I have. He is also my photographer, so major props. Thank you for calmly dealing with my Type A personality and for encouraging me to pursue my dreams. You’ve already fulfilled one of them!

So what does your style say about you? If it doesn’t say anything, and you want to keep it that way, more power to ya. But if you’ve been thinking about getting that pair of neon pants or that outrageously bedazzled necklace because you can’t stop thinking about it, do it! Quit worrying about what other people will think of you. Most of the time they’re just wishing they could pull off that look anyway. Or they’re staring because they want to know where you bought it. I know that’s what I’m doing half the time! Just “do you” because at the end of the day, the way you choose to present yourself is all that matters. I choose fun accessories, bold lipstick, and a hint of cheetah print.

You forgot to mention Mike’s Mickey Mouse fanny pack! Haha. I think that is my favorite!
